Midland Dump Truck Hire (MDH Limited) successfully completed our role in the construction of the new £multi-million Pets at Home National Fulfilment Centre at Stafford North Business Park. This landmark project, delivered by McLaren Construction’s Midlands and North division in partnership with Stoford, transformed a disused farmland site into a state-of-the-art distribution facility for the UK’s leading pet supplies retailer.
The 72-week construction project created a massive 670,000 sq. ft. steel framed warehouse facility, strategically located on the A34 with excellent connectivity to the M6 motorway network. The development included comprehensive groundworks involving cut and fill operations of the greenfield site, requiring extensive earthmoving capabilities to prepare the foundation for this substantial industrial complex.
The completed facility houses a modern distribution centre capable of supporting 600 employees per shift across three daily shifts, totaling 1,800 jobs. The development includes a three-storey main office building, two hub offices, associated dock levellers, level access doors, and a 592-space car park. Additional infrastructure comprises a concrete service yard, recycling store, tote store, and prefabricated gatehouse, with provision for a future 10,000 sq. ft warehouse extension.
As the Midlands’ leading dumptruck hire company, MDH Limited provided essential earthmoving services during the critical groundworks phase, facilitating the cut and fill operations necessary to transform the former farmland into a level construction platform. Our fleet ensured efficient material movement throughout the base build phase, supporting the project’s ambitious 72-week timeline.
The facility achieved BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating, incorporating sustainable design elements including a photovoltaic roof system and environmentally sensitive cladding colors that blend with natural surroundings. The car park was constructed as a floating feature on gravel to prevent local flooding, demonstrating the project’s commitment to environmental responsibility.
This national fulfilment centre now serves as Pets at Home’s primary UK distribution hub, replacing operations previously split between Stoke and Northampton facilities. The centralized location enables enhanced operational efficiency and positions the company for future growth in the British pet supplies market.
